Getting to the Phoenician-Punic acropolis of Monte Sirai near Carbonia — including replacement bus info for the suspended railway line.
From Cagliari, take the SS130 westbound toward Iglesias, then merge onto the SS126 southbound toward Carbonia. The total distance is 70 km and the drive takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. At Carbonia, follow Via Logudoro northward out of town — brown signs for Monte Sirai appear after the Sirai hospital. The final 2 km is a winding uphill road through Mediterranean scrubland to the plateau summit. A free car park (30 spaces) is available at the ticket office. Note: The road surface on the access ramp has loose gravel patches; SUVs and high-clearance vehicles handle it best, but any car can manage at low speed. From Iglesias, the drive is only 25 minutes via the SS126.
The Decimomannu–Carbonia railway is suspended for track modernization until December 31, 2026. From Carbonia, ARST Bus Line 801 connects the Cagliari–Carbonia route and stops at 'Sirai Distributore' at the base of the hill. Additionally, ATP Urban Linea A departs every 30 minutes from Carbonia Intermodale to Sirai Hospital — from the hospital, it is a 1 km uphill walk to the entrance. From Cagliari-Elmas Airport (CAG), a private transfer to Carbonia runs €90–€110; book through SardiniaTaxi.com or the itTaxi app. Important: card readers on the plateau often fail due to poor cellular signal — bring cash (€20–€30) for the taxi fare and site entry tickets.
